Not the red one
Two very different places in Xinjiang share the "Tianshan Grand Canyon" name. This National 5A scenic area sits about 40 kilometers south of Ürümqi and is green: glacial valleys, Tianshan spruce forest and open pasture. The famous red-sandstone slot canyon — the Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon — is near Kuqa (Kuche), several hundred kilometers to the southwest on the far side of the range. What you'll find
The canyon threads the northern foothills of the Tianshan between roughly 1,500 and 2,500 meters: boardwalk trails through dark stands of Schrenk spruce, meadow basins that Kazakh herding families still use as summer pasture, and long views toward the snow line. It is a landscape for unhurried walking rather than a single headline sight.

Most visitors come as a day trip from Ürümqi; access inside the scenic area is by shuttle between trailheads and viewpoints. Summer (June to September) is the reliable season — high sections stay cold well into spring, and afternoon weather can turn quickly at elevation.
