The last teardrop of the Atlantic

Sayram Lake earned its poetic nickname because it is roughly where the moisture carried east by Atlantic westerlies finally gives out — the "last teardrop" the ocean leaves on the continent. At about 2,070 meters of elevation and 458 square kilometers of surface, it is both the largest and the highest alpine lake in Xinjiang, and its cold, exceptionally clear water shifts between deep sapphire and turquoise with the light.

When to go

From roughly mid-June to July the lakeside meadows bloom with wildflowers against snow-dusted peaks — this is the picture most visitors come for. Winter brings a different spectacle: the lake freezes, and clear, bubble-veined blue ice forms along the shore. A ring road of roughly 90 kilometers circles the lake; most visitors drive or take the scenic-area shuttle between viewpoints.

Visiting notes

The lake lies along the G30 expressway between Ürümqi and Yining, just above the dramatic Guozigou (Fruit Valley) bridge, in the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture — Kazakh and Mongol herding culture is part of the landscape, with yurts and grazing horses along the shore in summer. Weather changes fast at this altitude: pack a warm layer even in July.

What the 5A rating tells you

China's national scenic area system uses 5A as its highest quality tier. The assessment considers the attraction itself together with visitor services, accessibility, safety, cleanliness and site management. It is a quality classification, not a live status feed: opening hours, ticket rules and entry procedures can still change.

Planning your visit

Use the coordinates above to identify the correct entrance area, especially when English map labels vary. Before setting out, confirm current opening dates, reservation requirements, passport rules, transport access and weather conditions through the attraction or local tourism authority.

Save the English name and coordinates on your phone before setting out. They help you distinguish the correct entrance when map labels or ticket listings use several different romanizations.
