Where Badaling sits
Badaling is in Yanqing District, at the northern end of the Guangou valley, roughly 70 kilometers northwest of central Beijing at about 40.354°N, 116.007°E. The wall here guards the top of a natural corridor running northwest out of the Beijing plain; Juyong Pass, a separate scenic area with its own ticket, closes the southern end of the same valley. Mutianyu — which shares a single 5A listing with Badaling — is not nearby: it lies northeast of the city in Huairou District, about 60 kilometers away by road, and the two are not connected by any walkable stretch of wall.
The restored section climbs in both directions from the entrance. The north route is the steeper and more photographed of the two and reaches the highest tower on this section at roughly 1,015 meters; the south route is generally quieter and still gives the ridge-line view most visitors come for.
Getting there and choosing a route
Badaling has its own high-speed rail station on the Beijing–Zhangjiakou line, built about 100 meters below the mountain — among the deepest railway stations in the world — which puts the wall roughly an hour from central Beijing. Long-distance buses from Deshengmen and organized coach tours also serve the site. Because departure patterns and last-return times change, confirm the return leg before you commit to a late afternoon on the ridge.
A cable car and a rail-mounted pulley car reduce the climb but do not remove it: substantial stair sections remain above both upper stations, and the descent is harder than the ascent on wet or icy stone. If the group includes anyone with limited mobility, ask about the specific stretch between the upper station and the wall surface rather than about total distance.
When to come
Badaling is the busiest section of the Great Wall and the crowd is concentrated on the north route in the middle of the day. Early morning and the last two hours before closing thin out noticeably. Autumn gives the clearest air and the sharpest ridge lines; winter is cold and windy but often the most visually dramatic, with snow picking out the wall against the slope.
Real-name booking and identity checks are applied at Beijing wall sites and the rules change, so bring the passport used for the reservation and check the operator’s current requirements shortly before the visit.
What the 5A rating tells you
China's national scenic area system uses 5A as its highest quality tier. The assessment considers the attraction itself together with visitor services, accessibility, safety, cleanliness and site management. It is a quality classification, not a live status feed: opening hours, ticket rules and entry procedures can still change.
Planning your visit
Use the coordinates above to identify the correct entrance area, especially when English map labels vary. Before setting out, confirm current opening dates, reservation requirements, passport rules, transport access and weather conditions through the attraction or local tourism authority.
Save the English name and coordinates on your phone before setting out. They help you distinguish the correct entrance when map labels or ticket listings use several different romanizations.
