Why Tashi Lhunpo matters
Tashi Lhunpo was founded in 1447 by Gendün Drup, a disciple of the reformer Tsongkhapa who was later honored as the First Dalai Lama. From the 17th century onward it became the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas, the second-highest lineage in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and it remains one of the great Gelug monasteries alongside Drepung, Sera and Ganden.
Unlike many Tibetan monasteries that survive mainly as museums, Tashi Lhunpo is a working institution: monks debate in the courtyards in the afternoon, and pilgrims circle the complex on the kora path from early morning.
What to see
The single most famous sight is the Maitreya Chapel (Jamkhang Chenmo), which houses a gilded bronze statue of the Future Buddha about 26 meters tall — commissioned by the Ninth Panchen Lama in 1914 and still among the largest gilded statues in the world. The complex also holds the jeweled funerary stupas of past Panchen Lamas and a massive festival thangka wall that towers over the northeast corner.
Walk the pilgrim kora clockwise around the monastery walls for rooftop-level views over Shigatse and the golden roofs of the chapels.
Visiting notes
Shigatse sits at roughly 3,840 meters above sea level — plan to acclimatize, usually via Lhasa, before visiting. Foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged in advance through a licensed tour operator; independent travel is not currently possible in Tibet. Photography inside chapels is often restricted or requires a fee, so ask before shooting.
