What Danxia means here

Mount Langshan is in Xinning County, Shaoyang, Hunan, at about 26.391°N, 110.752°E, close to the Guangxi border and in practice easier to reach from Guilin than from most of Hunan. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 as one of six components of China Danxia.

Danxia is a landform, not a place name: red continental sandstone and conglomerate, uplifted and then cut by water and gravity into cliffs, isolated towers and narrow slots. Langshan shows the tower end of that range particularly clearly — free-standing pillars rising straight out of green farmland, with the surrounding terraces still worked.

The named rocks

The signature formations are General Rock, a solitary pillar that reads as a standing figure from the valley; Chili Peak, a tapering tower that is among the tallest of its kind; Bajiao Zhai, a ridge walk with the widest views over the tower field; and a natural rock bridge spanning a gorge. The character 崀 in the mountain’s name is rare enough that it is effectively unique to this place.

Trails involve real stair climbing and exposed ridge sections with drops on both sides. This is a walking destination spread over a wide area rather than a single viewpoint; plan a full day if you want more than one of the main formations, and check which access roads and shuttle routes are running before setting out.

What the 5A rating tells you

China's national scenic area system uses 5A as its highest quality tier. The assessment considers the attraction itself together with visitor services, accessibility, safety, cleanliness and site management. It is a quality classification, not a live status feed: opening hours, ticket rules and entry procedures can still change.

Planning your visit

Use the coordinates above to identify the correct entrance area, especially when English map labels vary. Before setting out, confirm current opening dates, reservation requirements, passport rules, transport access and weather conditions through the attraction or local tourism authority.

Save the English name and coordinates on your phone before setting out. They help you distinguish the correct entrance when map labels or ticket listings use several different romanizations.
